Roots of the Company
Hubert James Taffin de Givenchy was born in 1927 Beauvais, France. At the age of seventeen Givenchy left Beauvais for Paris to become an apprentice couturier to some of the masters of the time such as Jaques Fath, Robert Piguet, Lucien Lelong and Elsa Schiaparelli. In 1952 Givenchy launched a line of ‘relaxed chic' yet luxurious ladies seperates- previously reserved for fittings only. Two years later Givenchy launched his ‘Givenchy Universite' becoming the first major fashion designer to present a luxury ready-to-wear line.
Givenchy continued his pursuit of success throughout the decades, using stars of fashion and film to promote his designs. He continued his success by diversifying quite naturally from clothing into other areas such as table linen, furnishing fabrics and then into fashion accessories such as shoes and jewellery (and of course the brand have more recently released luxury sunglasses). Since Givenchy retired in 1995 the Givenchy brand has maintained such levels of excellence by recruiting the new generation of Europes's young bloods, such as John Galliano, Alexander McQueen, Julian MacDonald, Qzwald Boateng and Riccardo Tisci.
